my 650 is so clean and unmolested.i just got it 2 days ago.it was not ridden much the past year.it was covered with a tarp.i immediately got a battery.i looked in the tank.its like shiny new aluminum inside. it was al.ost out of gas.i filled it up.i had to spray some starting fluid and it fired up.it doesnt sputter, pop,or hesitate when i give it throttle.but it dies every time i come to a stop.requiring lifting the seat, another shot of fluid and it starts back up.i rode it again about 30 minutes and it seems to be better.i hope i dont have to pull the carbs.i am hopeing for maybe seafoam and going on like an hour ride and all will be well.the gentleman i got it from took great care of it.he is battling severe illness and cant ride.what do you think of my plan.?

Your plan sounds ok and is worth a try but may not work. What rpm does the engine idle at? Ed

it really wont keep idling. It dies pretty soon after i let the choke in.i figure i will have to pull the carbs.i am not good at doing carb cleaning and getting tthings right.plus there is probably zero room between the airbox and the boots.i could replace float bowl gaskets while i am doing it.i wont replace the stock jets or needles with kit parts.i dont think they are as good as the originals.probably i wont even buy more than one kit.

Definitely do not replace any jets, needles, or other hard parts. My KZ650 has more than 62,000 miles on it and the carb metal parts are still like new. Be sure to keep the parts from each carb together. In other words, don't put any parts from one carb into a different carb or mix parts between carbs. Do you let the bike warm up with the choke on - you should. This may take a couple minutes before you can turn the choke completely off. Ed

If it dies w the choke off, then the problem could be clogged pilot circuits.
I believe your carburetors have pilot jet plugs w o-rings & the o-rings may need to be replaced. see diagrams at Partzilla.
The airbox ducts should be soft & pliable. If hard, then get new which are still available. Z1Enterprises.com has them.
I would try to get new float bowl gaskets. either OEM or K&L. Alternatively, you could try rejuvenating the old ones
by soaking them in LW silicone spray lubricant.

ps: I would have drained the old fuel, added some fresh, drain that, then refill the fuel tank.

Have you tried adjusting the idle speed adjuster and pilot screws?
