78 KZ200 Strange Engine Noise when shutting engine off

Got my 78 KZ200 running and when I turn the engine off or when the idle drops very low, I hear a clanking sound in the engine. Anyone have a clue what it might be?

Hello Map 747
The noise coming from your engine can be serval things. First, I would look at the clutch housing and primary gear for ‘Backlash’. Second, look at the dynamo flywheel, starter motor clutch and starter chain for wear. Hope this helps.

How low? Your engine should idle at 1000 - 1200 rpm. If the idle speed is set much lower there will be problems with noise, etc. Ed

This episode is the first start in about 20 years. I changed oil and restarted the enginr. It appears now to make the noise primarily when using the electric start. Do these engines have starter clutch problems? I've never worked on starter clutches. Is there a way to rebuild them and are the parts available? I have the idle around 1200 and it isn't making the noise at that speed.

Update, it certainly isn't doing it as much as it was at first. It was making a racket every time I used the electric start. Now I have started it about 6 times with no noise.

Scirocco - If you send an electronic version of that manual to KZQ (aka Bill Rodgers) he can add it to the list of manuals contained in www.kzrider.com/service-manuals . That way anyone in the future will have access to it. Ed
