If replacing a cam chain guide, will the base gasket need to be replaced, too? Thanx

Assuming you pull the head then the cylinder should come off too and that means the base gasket. OEM gaskets are strongly suggested if you decide to do the job.

Great question.
Next time I pull the head off my engine, I want to leave the cylinder block and pistons alone.
In my experience, whenever the head nuts come loose, the oil passage seals at the base gasket do too. I've learned to accept that, but...

There has got to be some trick that works to maintain that seal through the head swap process. If you happen to know a good one, please-please share it with us.

If you're pulling the head to change out the idlers on top of the cylinders you shouldn't need to disturb the base gasket. There is another idler under the cylinders and if you want to change that one at the same time you will have to pull the cylinders and change the base gasket.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The J engines use a Hyvo cam chain. There are no idlers, only rubbing blocks.

that my friend comes from someone pulling valve cover off W/O releasing tensioner , then reinstalling valve cover over tightning cam chain.
