Awful starter clutch noise still...

82 gPZ 1100

Installed new starter clutch and the smaller needle roller bearing. Still have the same awful noise problem though. It's annoying, and rather embarrassing, too LOL
What am I overlooking on this? Any listings of common mistakes people make doing this?? TY Gary

Some questions to help better understand.

What was it you replaced for the clutch? The 3 springs, cups, and/or roller bearings of the starter clutch?

Did you double check the large gear could only free spin one direction? The other direction should grip the crankshaft and not free spin.

How'd the teeth on the large gear, idler gear, and starter gear look? Any broken or worn teeth?

If you did not replace the large gear that may very well be the source of the noise. The image below shows what I mean. Ed

Yes, I'd replaced the starter clutch (round sprag that holds the rollers and spring caps) Also, replaced the needle roller bearing. Did not replace the actual larger gear with teeth.

Sounds like it's coming from the reduction gear area. It'd be nice if I could start with that stator cover off, ..is that possible? Any risk?

Without the cover there's nothing keeping the idler gear pin in place. But neither that gear, nor the starter should be spinning while the engine is running.
