I found the title ad according to it, it's a 1979 Kawasaki 650SX. I took off the tank, but haven't been able to reproduce the smoking. Furthermore, one of the ends of the spark plug boots came off and since then I have been unable to check the voltage across the ignition coil since then. and advice on where to go from here?
Try again. There's no such thing as a 1979 Kawasaki 650SX motorcycle. Maybe a picture would help us identify the model. Ed

As long as the boot is already off, you might as well clip 1/8 to 1/4 inch off the end of the wire and reinstall the boot. Sometime corrosion will form at the junction of the wire core and the spike in the boot. This can cause resistance or possibly intermittent spark.

A great tool to have is the Lisle 19380 (or similar). Non invasive spark tester so you dont do damage messing with these old bikes.
