engine bolt removal was created by Hawghunter
So in removing the engine mounting bolts do I need to get a wrench on the back side ?
Is the engine case providing a proper grip on those nuts ?

Some require two wrenches. Some don't.

Not 100% sure that a KZ550 has the same mount locations as a KZ1000 but on the bigger bike:

There are three long bolts - one on the front and two on the back. They usually require two wrenches.
There are two bolts low on the center of the frame. These are held in place with nuts inside wells in the case and don't require two wrenches.

The front engine mount plate has two bolts through the right downtube. They require two wrenches.
The side mount plates are held in place with two (each) bolts. They don't require two wrenches.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

thank you. i am putting little case savers on . 2 short bolts need to come out.
I wondered if the the engine case fins needed to be protected from the nuts and bolt heads in some way.. I read somewhere on the forum that those bolts only are torqued to 30 to 40 pounds so it doesnt seem like it would be a problem.

I would spray them with a good penetrant & let them sit at least overnight. better safe than sorry. Reapply the stuff a few times. Kroil is probably best. I've had good results w Liquid wrench penetrating spray lubricant. Regular wd40 isn't really a penetrant & pb blaster didn't do very good in a few tests I've seen. While the bolts are soaking, you could use a wood block & mallet to vibrate the bolts. use a mallet, not a sledge hammer.

Can you post a photo of the bolts in question?

so I finally found a photo. Looks to be held solidly in a built in cradle.

That looks the same as the 750. The bolt heads are held by the crankcase so you should just have to get a wrench/socket on the nuts. If they don't turn then see martin_csr's post :)

Not that I'm an expert, but it looks to me like those bolts shouldn't be problematic. I might not even bother w a penetrant.
