Hello I got I got a kz400 engine for pretty much free and I am putting it on a four-wheeler don't and I don't know much about the engine can someone help me find out what year it is the engine number is k4e161261

That info is on the back cover of the factory service manual. There is an old kz400 site that is still up where you can download the manual. I think it is kz400.com. Do not go into the discussion threads on that site, rumor has it that there are some really nasty computer viruses living there.

[edit] I was mistaken. Whoever made all those scans did not scan back covers. To answer your question, you will need to dig through the Model Identification scans.

And yes, in addition to the engine numbers, photos will help categorize the motor. The Kz400/440 covered a lot of years and the motor went through some changes that can be grouped by years. That'll help identify what carbs/electrical you should have or can swap with etc.
