i guess i wasn't clear. i would like to freshen up an oem set of rings with something cheaper than oem.
i have seen aftermarket rings for the kz.
what is different between the two? is there a way to make the kz rings work on a gpz piston?
it's just hard for me to believe the rings for the gpz fit nothing else in the world.

Check the bore sizes for starters, then the ring thickness.
So a KZ1100 might work but nothing else. Know your part numbers and ring sizes.
Watch evilbay and try looking for something else with a 72.5mm bore. I have searched Summit Racing
among other sources for some odd ball pistons I have. Use your favorite search engine and start following links.
I do have some nos 1.0 GPz1100 rings but, they are going my '83 engine with the nos pistons.
Do diligence should eventually pay off. Good luck.

I have seen somebody writing that many of the pistons manufactors are using often the same piston rings, meaning there is not so many manufactors of piston ring?

As long as piston ring is made in Japan they shall have good quality?

I don’t know if these is correct?

makes you wonder what the difference is between a 13008-5055 and a 13008-5037.
i measured a set of new 75mm wisecos and found them VERY close as far as width and depth. the only difference is the second ring on the oem has a gas expander notch which wiseco does not use. the piston groove is not cut any different. i suspect that notch is the difference between 5055 and 5037. ..???

Piston rings on the major aftermarket pistons, Wiseco, JE, MTC, Etc are modern high performance design, not 35 year old tech. They are usually thinner than the old stuff. If you go with a Wiseco kit then you have state of the art ring technology.

What is improved in modern ring kit?
Lees compression leak?
More hours before worn out?

Improved materials, thinner for les drag on the cylinder walls, oil scraper works better. Most of the new stuff, Busas, ZX14s, etc come stock with these new ring packs.

well, i couldn't see any differences between the 5055 gpz rings and the 5037 kz1100s, so i ordered "1981-83 Kawasaki Standard Size NPR Piston Ring Set" off fleabay and they ARE exactly the same. problem solved
