So I have oil leaking from left side of head on my 1983 KZ1000J3, wets and drops onto pipes and smokes and the plugs have typical burnt oil
black residue on top. Where to start the checking? The engine runs well and carbs seem quite synced but the oil fouls plugs so that it runs on 3
cylinders until it´s hot than runs ok.

Start with comp test before taking off head to check the rest?

My recommendation is to wash the engine with degreaser, spray citrus type works well, dry, then start up engine and look for source of leak. Some guys like to spray down the offending areas with foot powder spray before starting the engine because it highlights the leak source.

Renew the valve cover gasket and cam end plugs.
I switch to aluminum cam end plugs years ago and never had any oil leaks again.
Oil wet spark plugs are a sign of weak valve stem seals.

Thanks I’ll start there and I suspect the valve stens too, lots of Power in the engine strong and even runner so I think comp/rings are ok...

NOW million dollar question is if the 1982 J and 1983 J are the same or compatible when it comes to upper end engine gaskets?

I found a complete Athena gasket kit and lots of other loose gaskets for 1982 but will they work on my machine?

Well it turned out the valve cover only had some black silicone to seal and the cam end plugs were probably from 83,
the cams look completely new and it is on the very tight side will shim it out 0.10.
Very good surface both on cover and head after some cleaning.
Cometic gasket arrived a few days ago and 4 alu cam end plugs with bought from Germany so soon
hopefully leak is history!

Also the new looking cams suggest what the seller said might be true, the guy who rebuilt bike two years ago
he says put hotter cams in there.

So with new cam end plugs from germany and a Cometic valve cover gasket and NO silicon I bolted her down yesterday.
Cleaned up and painted the cover while at it, front left 6x52 bolt had a trashed head so replaced it with a 50mm new one.

Double checked that the ignition coil went to the right cyls and then fire up, which went from bad to nothing at all.
Reserve on the tank since I had just a little gas left but finally no action at all. Checked ignition, comp and then I see that plug 4 is as dry as Sahara. New gas in the tank and she fires up and runs absolutely great - appearently these things are really hung up on
this petrol thing?!?

No oil leak now, seems tight enough.

Had to take a little garage run, snow outside but that´s gone and a few plus degrees today so will have a little spin!
