KZ400 engine swap help

I recently acquired a basket case of a 1981 KZ400J (4 cylinder engine). It was stored in a barn for 20 years where it was stopped after an engine failure. The former owner took the engine apart to realize that it had a broken valve and a hole in one of the pistons. So he just stored it with the engine open. Now everything is corroded and the engine is virtually beyond economic repair.
As I live in Europe (Portugal) engines for these bikes are really rare , so was wondering what other engines will fit this bike? Will a GPZ400 engine fit?
Best Regards
Sergio

I have no idea, but the GPz 400 is probably a good match. From a motorcycle specs site they have the same engine displacement, same bore & stroke and the same carburetors. It's possible the crankcase could be different, so I again, I really don't know.
Z 400 J
GPz 400
ps: also within the realm of possibility are the Z500/550 models. also ZR400 & ZR550.

Not 100% sure about the Gpz550H model engines. Because the Z400J was basically a Z550 with smaller bore.
The Z500/550 are quite common and dirt cheap so you should be able to find a new engine on Ebay in Germany or Italy.

Okay. Thanks. The back cover of a Kawasaki service manual lists the model as Z400-Jx w frame numbers listed as KZ400J-00xxxx.
In case you aren't aware, that 4-cyl model wasn't sold in the USA. The KZ400 models sold here are Twins.

But yes, any Kz400J, Kz500, and Kz550 motor will fit. As will a ZX550A (Gpz), and Zr550A (European bike called "Z550F", not found in the U.S.). But there will be carburetor and airbox conflicts unless you get a model using the same or similar carbs.
The carbs on that Kz400J should have been TK21 manual-slide carbs. If you are trying to use them, then your motor selection will be limited to Kz400J, Kz550C, Kz550A1-A3, and Kz550D(gpz), along with some possible models we did not get in the U.S. like the Kz500 models, and maybe the Kz550B.
You can find several service manuals along with supplement manuals if you follow the links in my signature. They will identify all of the chain-drive models, and will tell you which carbs they came with in the model descriptions. I think the TK21 and TK22 carbs are likely interchangeable, so look for models using either of those carbs.
