I would like to remove the head on my KZ1000J engine 1981 LTD with it still installed in the frame.
Seems pretty tight so just wondering if anyone has done this.
Thanks

Yes you can.

Download the manual from this site or if you already have one refer to the Engine disassembly - Engine installed section and follow the instructions step by step.

I removed the tank, the carbs, the coils to make space. Then you will need to remove the smog covers and then slide the camshaft cover towards the back of the bike.

Then the pipes and everything else.

Enjoy !

Here's a link to the FSM (Factory Service Manual) found on KZr's Home Page > Z Information > Service Manuals.

Absolutely fantastic. Thanks guys for all the replies. I will download the manual. Just didn't look like there was enough room ;-)

The block also comes off on bike, and I personally (leak freak), would not remove the head without replacing the block base gasket.

I have the engine out of the frame now. So removing the head is not an issue. Thanks for all the help.
