Disassembly of KZ750 Engine was created by JohnLuke
So, if you look at my previous threads you’d see that I’m building a KZ750. Last week I fired her up for the first time. She ran for maybe max 2 minuets, probably less. Long story short I’m taking her apart to give it a VERY thorough cleaning inside. NOW, my question is, can I remove the piston and the rings and reuse them after only 2 minuets of running? Or do would I need to buy new rings?

I would assume the 2 minuets for running isn’t enough to ACTUALLY break the engine in. Just would like a second opinion.

And if you’re wondering, I found some sandblasting material in the oil pan. I found out what if from. I checked all the bearings and journals and the crank and we’re all good.

Thanks!

Did you replace the rings previously? If so, and they are not damaged, you can safely reuse them. If they are the original rings then the decision is more difficult...

I did. The cylinders were honed and new rings were installed. I started it for 2 minuets or so. So I can reuse them. I was just worried that if I removed them from the pistons that they wouldn’t make a correct seal when I assemble it.

I’m going to dip the cases in warm water with simple green. Then I’ll blow dry everything and use tube brushes to clean tight spots.

Thanks!

Also, am I gonna need to buy a new head gasket and head gasket base? On that start up for 2 minutes I didn’t notice any leaks.
If if so, and both need replacing. Where would I buy those? They came with a $70 set with all the gaskets I need. But if i need to buy them separately they’re A LOT. Like $120.

Also there are stretch to yield bolts on the head(middle front and back).

The part number is 92001-1445 you can look it up on partzilla to see the diagram.

Bottom line, after torquing everything thing down then running it for 2 minuets, what all do I need to replace? Or should I say, what parts are one time use only?

Thanks!

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThose bolts you reference are problematic. I would NOT take them to the speced torque value because they may break. I learned this when working on my 750 engine. Tighten them by feel and when you feel them start to stretch STOP. I'd get new bolts too.

Regarding the gaskets, the OEM gaskets are superior to most if not all aftermarket gaskets. If you find the part numbers on partzilla and then compare on ebay sometimes you can get a good deal..

Oh okay. I’ll go ahead and buy those bolts and I’ll see what I can find on gaskets.

As for those new rings I talked about, even after starting it up for 2 minuets I shouldn’t have any difficultly with them? Meaning that they won’t seal properly?

Thanks!

Are Z1 Enterprise gaskets good? Or do I need to get OEM quality?

Thanks

You can reuse your 2 minutes piston rings, nothing to worry about this, except you destroy one or more during the installation

I never had any problems with after market gasket sets but who knows, shit happens sometimes.....

Oh okay, So you say buy new gaskets, right? If so I may go with Z1 because they’re cheaper than most.

JohnLuke, please do add your bike model 750/4 and year of build to your avatar profile.
A KZ750 could be a twin or a four cylinder, just to prevent misunderstandings.
