A quick question. was created by davido
I need to take off the transmission cover(the small engine cover from behind the front sprocket) from my J-model engine (81 CSR1000). I have an oil leak and want to change the seals and gasket. Do I first need to drain the engine oil or can I manage without it?
Also, is there anything that might fly across the room when I remove the cover? Anything I dont want to dislodge while replacing it?
Thanks in advance

No need to drain the oil. You can lean the bike to the right side.
Nothing will fly away if you pull the cover.

Why not drain and fill the same oil after the job is done?

Just add another kickstand to the right side of the bike, or buy a special lift that will do the balancing act for you?? I have latex gloves, soap and water!!

Some wooden blocks or a lifting jack do the same job without soap and water.
You can leaning the bike with the steering bar and in gear onto the wall.

OK. Went gone done did it. Lent over against the wall leaning on the bar end. Some wooden blocks under the wheels (Putting it into gear does nothing as the chain and front sprocket have to come off!!)
Had some dribbling once the cover was off. Maybe half a liter. Ill check tomorrow and see if the whole thing has worked and the bike is now oil tight.
