currently my tach drive housing is overwhelmed with oil seepage.
my plan is to replace the housing as a kit with a new oil seal and o-ring.
once replaced, should i be able to run with the tach cable removed and leak free?
or do i need to fabricate some kind of cap?

You have to fabricate some cap or plug to drive leak free.

What bike are we talking about here? KZ550? If so I think you can run with the tach cable disconnected as long as the tach gear and all the seals are present and functional.

I would check the hardware store to see if they have cap. If they don't have anything, you could possibly use the threaded fitting from a used tach cable & install it with a disk of some sort.

You do not need anything as long as the inner seal of the drive housing is in good shape as Nessism pointed out, your cable is not any kind of seal once installed, it is the seal that retains the oil. The only other variable is the shaft of the drive gear, if damaged it will leak even with a good seal.
Good luck.

Hey found this thread on the search function. I believe my tach drive seal is leaking or is part of the leak I have going on with my bike. Is there a write up anywhere on how to remove the seal for replacement? The Clymer manual doesnt cover it as best I can tell.

Thanks!
