Air suction valves in KZ550H2

I had my 83 GPz 550 valve cover vapor blasted. Looks great. Guy removed the air suction valve covers and the air suction valves themselves.

I cleaned them up and I think they're fine.

BUT, the clearance between the reeds and the curved "reed stops" are all different. And, one air suction valve has generally lower clearance between the reeds and stops, and the other air suction valve has generally higher clearances.

Question: which air suction valve goes on which side of the valve cover?? And, does the clearance matter? Can't find anything in my shop manual or online.

Thanks!

The reed valves are not handed and can go either side.
Matching clearance isn't crucial but the ocd in me makes me set them all the same.
It's easy enough to bend the stops if you need to.

Thanks. What clearance should they be set at? I can’t find a spec.

Unless you are doing a complete restoration on this bike, most remove that suction system, and cap off the reed covers leaving the reeds inside. Removing the hoses and system frees up much more area. APE makes cool reed cover caps, or look for another valve cover assembly from Canada, that doesn't have any caps.

Thanks. I am actually a showroom stock resto on this bike, so I’m keeping the air suction valves.

So just wondering if there is actually a clearance spec on the reed stoppers.

Thanks again.

No spec as far as I can find.
Just pick a number and set them all the same if you need to.
Just go halfway between your highest and lowest figures.
The main concern is that they seat correctly.
After a long time the reeds take on a slight curve and do not fully seal.
If this is the case you flip them over so the curve flattens against the plate.
