Evening all from the middle of the Irish Sea
Z500 engine strip down started today - engine out and top off to find tacho drive in less than perfect condition. With ex' cam likely to be as rare as hens teeth - what options are there? Is a electrical tacho an easy upgrade?
Advice appreciated
Many thanks

Usually damage comes from installing the EX camshaft without removing the tach drive pinion. Make sure that it is out.
Incidentally, you might want to check out the valve train warning page in my signature.

I can't check z500 part numbers, but the z500 camshaft may be the same camshaft used in the early Kz550's. The cam timing is exactly the same, so the camshaft itself is probably the same.

But I would always prefer an electronic tach.

Most likely the electronic tach would get it's signal pulses off the coil or pickup. Either way it would be easy-peasy to do. If your wanting to keep your stock tach, then yeah, you need a replacement exhaust cam.

I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress
