Kz 650 1980 starter clutch issue was created by Dormis
Hello, I have a kawasaki kz650 1980 model, with some form starter clutch problem. Seen a lot of threads on this issue, but the usual fix of changing the springs did not do it. I've also replaced the old starter sprocket with a new one in hope that a slightly wider sprocket diameter would prevent the starter clutch from slipping. None of this has yet to work. Does anyone have some idea of what can be done? Heard someone talked about streching the spirngs 20%, but I've not tried it yet; might this be a soulution?

Not sure .... I replaced the part that holds the springs, pins and rollers..... could be worn there (like 650 guy says) but don't want to suggest replacing it and being wrong.... did the sprocket like you too ....... sure you did new rollers too right ? Maybe got a bad spring but that would suck replacing them too and not helping. Mine has not missed a beat .... wish I had a solution to yours.

Yeh, replaced the rollers When i did the springs. May be worth a try changing the part that holds the springs and rollers. Starter sprocket is New and machined pretty rough, so Really When i think about it, the only part still worth replacing may be the part that holds the rollers. Thanks for replies

Ok, I am thinking of bying a new clutch assy in hope that it will fix the problem. Parts that has already been replaced (ref. picture):10, 11, 12 and 14. So I am hoping that changing the assy (numer 9 in picture) wil help the clutch not slipping. Only thing though: The clutch assy does not look damaged or worn out. Does anybody know if it is still worth changing? It is after all a 38 year old bike, and I would guess that metalls get fatigue after so long.

Hi I know it is a few years since you made this post, but did you ever solve the problem? I ask as I have the same problem. Thanks Ian

Don't replace just rollers and springs, replace the whole thing, inner race and casing. That should do it. The sprag starting clutch of the ZR-7 is another option, but you would need to change the secondary shaft also and some other parts...it is a much more involved (and expensive)upgrade..

Follow the link weeZee posted. (
www.kzrider.com/forum/2-engine/607684-kz...h-solution-zr7s-part
). This worked very well for me, and no; you do not need to replace the secondary shaft. weeZee laid the bike on it's side (in the post), but it's easy enough to change the parts from the bottom with the bike standing on it's center stand . Hope this helps :)
