Hi, I've recently bought a kz1000, the compression is between 150 and 160 psi but I'm getting lots of smoke out of the exhaust. The plugs are black and sooty it's running on pod's with 135 main jet's. Any idea's why it's smoking so much?
Cheers

Valve guide seals?

I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.

Probably unrelated to the main jet size.

Black unburnt fuel smoke could indicate ignition and/or carburetion and/or valve clearance issue(s).

Some things to check would include:
Spark quality on a new correct plug;
Ignition timing;
Functioning of the advancer;
Fuel levels using clear tube tests;
Pilot circuits -- cleaning and tuning;
Valve clearances.

Burning oil smoke dispite good compression and good valve seals could result from a broken oil ring.

Worn valve guide seals usually cause the worse exhaust smoking during warm-up, with less smoke after riding a few miles.

If the bike had been stored for a time before putting it back into service, it may start smoking less and less with regular use.

And, would change the oil and filter.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks, I'll check the above. I'm running a zx9r and a bonnerville hardtail too but can't wait to get the z1000 running good for the summer.
