Tach Drive Gear Removal for 1980 KZ750 Twin? was created by snacklover
I'm trying to replace the tach drive gear in my KZ750 since it's leaking oil from the housing (already tried replacing seals and cable to no avail) so I ordered a replacement tach drive gear. The only thing is, I can't figure out how exactly it is supposed to come out.
I scoured the forums and only found methods for different models with different housings. The service manual is mum on the removal method as well. Some people with similar models say it should just be pulled out with force, but it looks like the threading would make that difficult? Just trying to see if there is a way to get it out that doesn't require removing the cams.

There is no mechanically lock.
The drive gear will only be hold in place by the black oil seal ring.
A little force to pull or push the gear out is necessary

Thanks for responding. What about the housing itself though (the metal socket around the seal)? Here’s a photo of the replacement for reference.

In your second picture it looks like someone has been in there before, there appears to be some red stuff around the edge of the unit, this would make it hard to remove.
