The factory tension unit adjusts the cam-chain pressure automatically. You only need to follow the removal and installation procedure described in the factory service manual (FSM).

I'm not sure if it needs replaced it's just got a little slack in it and I don't know if it's supposed to be like that or if it's supposed to be tight tight

Slack in the chain between the cams is simply the result of the top guide holding the chain down when the cover was installed. The slack is needed when the cam cover is installed, and why the chain tension must relieved per FSM procedure before cam-cover removal.
It is imperative to follow the FSM instructions.

If you look inside the valve cover, there is an upper cam guide that's shaped the same as the slack you're seeing.
When checking the valves, the automatic tensioner may take up the slack created by removing the valve cover.
If you don't reset the automatic tensioner afterwards, the cam chain could be too tight & it will damage the rubber slipper guides & possibly damage or stretch the cam chain.

After removing the valve cover. before turning the crankshaft. 1981 KZ650, but the ZN is similar.

After turning the crankshaft.

You need to remove the tensioner cap, spring, and pull back the wedge before installing the cam cover or the chain will be over tensioned.
