1981 z750L engine oil. was created by gordone
Hi,

On the motor cover it is tagged SAE 10-40 oil. I assume the best oil when the engine was coming on the marked don`t exist any longer,
so what oil shall I use on my engine? I`m living in Norway so the temperature in the summer is between 10-25 Celsius.

I understand I shall continue to use mineral oil, as long as you don`t have done a complete rebuild of the engine.

What quality class shall I look for?

Can I use these oil?

I say maybe. Since Helix is also for diesel engines, it might be ok.

What you really want is JASO-MA certification. That is the Japanese standard for motorcycles with wet clutch.

Here in the U.S., it is available in 10-40, and several other weights.

I use Rotella 20/50 and a little Lucas Zinc additive. I use the Zinc on all the air cooled VW's I work on.

I definitely would NOT use Shell Helix HX5 in my motorcycle. It is NOT JASO-MA certified. The bottle and the Shell website show it is certified to meet "Specifications: API SL/CF". If you use it expect to ruin your bike's clutch. I recommend you simply go to a motorcycle dealer and see what motor oil they use that is JASO-MA certified. Ed

I doubt that Helix would hurt your clutch. It's a diesel engine oil and those are almost always a good alternate for over priced motorcycle oil. I've used all different kinds of diesel oil in my bikes over the years and none of them have damaged my clutch in the least.

Edit: a review of different Helix grades suggest there are a lot of different options. I'd look for one that is rated for common diesel engines. CI or CH grade will be fine with no risk of clutch damage.

I don't disagree that diesel oil usually is ok, but Shell Helix is for diesel and gasoline engines, so I would be concerned. I'm sure a motorcycle shop would be able to provide advise regarding what oils are available in the local area for bikes. I'm sure there are JASO-MA oils available there, such as Shell Rotella-6, that are not very expensive. Ed

Today I was at my local bike shop (Yamaha). The oil closed they had for me was Yamalube 10W-40 JASO T 903:2011 Mineral Oil.
I can see there are two bike letter MA on the backside? Could these be the correct one for me?

Please see attached photo of the oil.

I`m not complete re change the oil I`m only topping up, but it`s look the engine using oil, the bike is new for me so I have to see what happens, but I needed to add 0,7l to it now.

For the next season will i replace filter and oil complete.

Yamalube will work fine in a motorcycle. Even a Kawasaki. I would even ask the shop which weight is best for your temps.

Where I live it's getting hot enough to switch to 20-50. High 90's F.

Q8 Moto SBK 10W-40 is a good alternative in the Nordic countries.
You can buy it in 25l at Q8 stations and Swedol shops in Sweden and the 25l can is almost the same price as 4 1l shop bottels needed for your oil change.
I bet it worth a trip to Sweden for you as all automotive stuff in Norway comes with absolutely silly price tags.

On that Yamaha label, JASO T 903 & MA are Japanese specifications for oil used on motorcycles with a wet clutch --- the engine oil lubricates the engine, transmission & clutch. usually designated as JASO-MA.
