My exhaust end is rusted out was created by Setton
'82 KZ750-H LTD in question here.

So you know how the headers come out of the engine, go under, and then connect to a megaphone style pipe that's seperate? The part that goes into the header on the left is rusted out. It still works for the time being, but I want to try to source replacement ends for both sides. Found this out when replacing the rear tire. The exhaust does not seem to be leaking from the joining section and it's still coming out of the baffles as it should.

So I'm wondering what diameter I should be looking at, and if there's any tuning issues I should be worried about. I'm also hoping to find something in black, not chrome, and hopefully with a meaner sound than stock.

What I really need, though, to be able to shop around, is the diameters of the pipes so I know if something will fit.

You may want to check out the folks in the link below regarding exhaust parts. Ed

Thank you, Ed, but what about diameters?

Get out your calipers and measure the outer diameter of the header just before it meets the silencer.

If you do not have calipers, get some. :) Home Depot and Harbor Freight will have them, as will Amazon.

OR...

Wrap a strip of paper around the header at the same point as above. Tape the edge down - this will make it easier.

Make a mark where the paper overlaps the taped-down edge.

Measure the length from the edge of the paper to the mark; this is the circumference of the pipe.

Divide the circumference by 3.14159 to get the diameter.

Easy peasy. And cheap. B)

Sorry, but I cannot be much help regarding diameters. The exhaust on my KZ650-C1 is laid out much differently than that of the KZ750-E models. Ed

Can you post a photo of where it's rusted? not sure what you mean when you say the megaphone pipes are separate.
On the 750H the #1 & #4 exhaust pipes & mufflers should be welded to the L/R center manifolds.
My 81 650 has the same muffler system as the 750H & the RH muffler broke off at the weld. the baffle broke off w the muffler.

KZ750-H muffler system with rusted broken off muffler. baffle tube remaining in place. not mine

Looking at that photo, I think my exhaust is more rusted out than I thought... Gonna need to replace the... what's the part where the 2 go into 1 called? The collector I think? Anyway, if you look at where the megaphone connects to that piece, and there's that shield looking piece on the outside? It's where the megaphone goes into the 2-1 piece. The megaphone is kind of conical and fits in there, and it's fallen off. It only stays on due to the bolts on the frame of the bike.

Also, as an aside I'm going to have to track down an oil leak... It's a very minor leak, but it's a leak. It seems to be coming from the disc on the bottom that you unbolt to let the oil out. I think maybe I didn't tighten it up enough the last time I changed the oil, but I'm going to have to do a complete oil change because the sight glass is absolute shit. I'm a little miffed about this.

A photo would help, but it sounds like you may need to replace the exhaust system.
If the muffler is broken off at the weld, you might be able to clamp on an aftermarket muffler.
and to do that you may have to cut off the muffler pipe some.

mufflers: J&P Cycles or JC Whitney. eebbaayy. Helix racing. Dunstall replicas. Emgo mufflers. etc.

L-to-R. exhaust/header pipe --- weld A --- manifold/collector --- weld B --- muffler pipe --- weld C --- muffler.
