Started a clutch thread. I think I'll move the related items here.

Hey Steve. Love that basket holder tool!

If you're gonna tear it down pull the generator cover first, and push the crank to the left to take up the endplay. Then look at the damping washer behind the flywheel. I'm assuming the KZ engine uses it also. If you see space between the damper and the case, that's a problem.

That damper is meant to pull the crank to the left and reduce endplay noise.

Been there done that. If it's too tight it will make the starter spin. The crank has no end play even without it. I tightened the motor mount bolts and that helped a little. I'm running out of things to check. I don't hear it at idle and you would think I would.

What do you mean no endplay? In my book they don't give an endplay spec, but it should equal the thrust washer gap on the crank. About .015" - .020". You can't check endplay with the damper installed.

When I took the rotor off I pulled on the bolt to see if there was any play. None.

It may be the crank is tight and you need to pry or push harder to shift it back and forth. Every crank and cam has to have endplay or it wouldn't turn.

When are you hearing the noise?

My buddy that worked on the CHP bikes told me a story about a noise that drove him crazy. Thought it was the crank, and could only hear it riding, not in the shop. It turned out to be a messed up petcock rattling under certain vacuum.
