If you're gonna tear it down pull the generator cover first, and push the crank to the left to take up the endplay. Then look at the damping washer behind the flywheel. I'm assuming the KZ engine uses it also. If you see space between the damper and the case, that's a problem.
That damper is meant to pull the crank to the left and reduce endplay noise.

When are you hearing the noise?
My buddy that worked on the CHP bikes told me a story about a noise that drove him crazy. Thought it was the crank, and could only hear it riding, not in the shop. It turned out to be a messed up petcock rattling under certain vacuum.
