KZ1000 LTD - Trouble Starting was created by Rogan81
Hi Gents -

I'm looking for a little help with my KZ1000 LTD. I recently changed the oil and may have overfilled a bit. The bike turns over and will occasionally run idle for a few seconds and then shut down. I hold the electric start button down for about 10 seconds and sometimes it starts but when I go to throttle it shuts down. Will overfilling the oil cause this problem? Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Would remove enough oil to achieve the correct level. Various pumps are available (or even a turkey baster with hose attached).

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks Patton. I'll try to siphon some oil out this afternoon.

Would it be easier to drain a pint or so at a time from the oil filter drain? Drain, run, repeat as necessary?

So when I got home this afternoon I found gas all over my garage floor. I don't have a good feeling about this. Looks like gas is leaking out of gaskets etc. any help?

I attached pics but may not be the best quality.

I disconnected and drained the tank. Not sure where to go from here.

Can't pinpoint source of leak from the pics.

Leak may result from carb internal issue such as leaking fuel valve, or from an external issue such as a leaking fuel line fitting, etc.

Is the airbox filling with fuel?

Do the carbs have overflow hoses?

Is the petcock being left in PRI position? If leaking somewhere after the petcock (in OFF, ON or RES), the petcock isn't stopping fuel flow as it's supposed to, which allows fuel to continue flowing on to wherever it's escaping. In which case there's a petcock issue as well as the reported fuel leakage issue.

Good Fortune! :)

No external leaks? It's needle and seat time.

Thank you for the input. I'm feeling a little helpless here. If I brought this to a shop do you have any insight on how much ch it would cost to get running?

Since it's a new to you bike I'd start with a petcock rebuild, carb rebuild and all new fuel hose,
drain the oil and add fresh oil

Might offer up some pizza and beer a little cash and see if someone close could come help
bet that'd be cheaper than a shop if you can find one that works on these old bikes.

No way of knowing what they may charge. But what zukdave said is good advice if you're keeping the bike longterm.

After going back and looking at the pic.'s first thing I'd do is new carb intake 's and factory clamps.
