Ok so im going through my carbs for my 1000 and after taking the bowls off i see this. The carbs dont have a pilot jet? Why and how does this work? Also is this correct?

Im questioning the metal plug where a pilot jet would normally be

Would guess that there's a pilot jet screwed in underneath the plug; and thinking it's anybody's guess what's holding the plug in position over the pilot jet.

i thought that also at first but looking at it, its to far away from the bottom of the bowl. I believe its either press fitted or threads in. does anyone know for sure if that is supposed to be there in my exact carbs?

It's held in by an o-ring. Put a drop of oil around it and pull it straight out with a set of pliers.

Light weight oil, or little gasoline works too. For me, these plugs and o-rings were a pita royal. Even with extreme care gripping the plug (while removing) a couple would always get mangled and need to be replaced...the metal is very soft.

Will removing them have any performance gain? Or will it negatively affect how it runs?

They need to be plugged as the pilot is fed by an opening in the main jet shaft.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Thank you for the direct answer man. I understand slide carbs but diaphragm carbs are a little different. I like the fact that the diaphragm carbs basically change the air to fuel ratio from the atmospheric pressure so you dont have to jet it for different elevations

Ok so i tried starting it and it didnt start. It was flooded after i checked the plugs. What are the carb air screw settings supposed to be? I started it at 1 1/2 and it wasnt starting at all so i changed it to 2 1/4 which is what it was at before i cleaned and adjusted the floats. I also put new intake boots on it before i threw the carbs back on.
