Hello everybody, I just bought a 1981 kz305 and it won't startup. I have shortened the starter relay and the motor cranked . I assume because of this that the relay is no good any more which is why I've ordered a new one. The previos owner also said that the points were not adjusted properly and it also didn't come with the points cover. Does anybody know where I can get that cover? since I am very new to bikes I am in desperate need for lots of help. any ideas?

Welcome to KZR
First get a factory manual and get real familiar with it and your bike. It will be a life saver and well worth the investment.
Pictures are always welcomed so we can see whats going on with your bike.
I suggest going thru the entire tune up and maintenance suggested in the manual to insure your Kaw is road worthy and safe.

Welcome aboard! Please describe what happens when you try to start it normally using the starter button.

Also, as suggested you need to use the Kawasaki Service Manual. You can use the one at the link below until you buy a hard copy. Ed

I'm pretty sure this is the cover you need. You'll also need the gasket, which is really easy to find on ebay - oh, and the screws.

Parts diagrams can be found on line for free. I typically use Partzilla. You can find several useful pieces of information that will help in your search. You can get the part number, Price, availability and a list of what models it was used on. This can all be useful for an Ebay search. You'll know if it's compatible if you find one from a newer/older model year. Some common items were used across 20 -30 models over a 10 year span.

In your case, the part number is 14031-1018 and it is no longer available from a dealer. It looks like it was only used on the 81-82 305 models.

PRODUCT OBSOLETE
This Kawasaki 14031-1018 COVER-GENERATOR,CAP is used on these models and components:

1981 KZ305-A1 CSR ENGINE COVERS (KZ305-A1)
1981 KZ305-A1 CSR ENGINE COVERS (KZ305-A2)
1982 KZ305-A2 CSR ENGINE COVERS (KZ305-A1)
1982 KZ305-A2 CSR ENGINE COVERS (KZ305-A2)
1982 KZ305-B1 CSR Belt ENGINE COVERS

I'm sure you'll find one, but it may take a little digging. Good Luck.

I believe that cover is is actually for the valves on top of the head. Use the pictures in the Parts Diagram to confirm. However, that seller is a known dismantler who parts out bikes on E-Bay. He's obviously parting out a KZ305 engine. You can always ask if he' still has the Points cover you need.

It looks an awful lot like the points cover to me, just upside down. Unless I'm mistaken, the points assembly on a 305 is on the cam shaft, not the crank shaft, so it is located on the head. The generator cover is a different thing.

You could be right. I've never seen or touched a KZ305 and I assumed the points were in the same location as the bigger KZ's. The seller's description also said it was a valve cover. Ya' learn something new everyday. The OP should be able to use the diagram pictures to determine what he needs.
