Engine ID? was created by VTEC
On an '82 KZ1000 is there anyway to tell if an engine belongs to a bike comparing the VIN and crankcase ID?

Also noticed that some cases have "KHI" before the ID number. What does that stand for?

My guess for KHI would be Kawasaki Heavy Industry

My understanding with the frame and motors is find the date the motor was made (I'm sure there is a chart someplace) If the frame build date and the motor build date are relatively the same time frame probably is about as close as your going to get. I don't believe Kawasaki was real good at making sure the dates matched. The frame would get what ever motor was next. could be a couple of months apart.

I did a VIN search which showed manufacturer plant at AKASHI, Japan. That plant is still working today under the name Kawasaki Heavy Industry. Wonder if KHI means the engine was manufactured at that plant? The KHI is cast into the case, not stamped like the ID number.

If it says Kawasaki on the tin then it usually is, from WW2 Bombers, Channel tunnel boring machines, garden machinery or oil tanker ships.

KHI = kawaski Heavy industries.

You never get matching numbers on these, but they are usually within ten or a few hundred. More of a 'creep' on later models... ie i own 000022 Gpz550, but engine number was IIIRC 000028. Do this on a 10 000 serial number and it is sometimes double digits out.

If you have an engine number we can probably check it out for you.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces
