Strange miss fire. was created by McZed
My bike is a KZ1000 J1,
I was out on it today when suddenly it seemed to loose power, and strangely the rev counter stopped working. Headed for home and it was way down on power and miss firing. I nursed it along for about 5 miles when suddenly the power kicked back in again, rev counter also back working and it cruised home as if nothing was wrong. It seems to be running fine now but I’m afraid to take it out again in case it leaves me stranded. Does anyone have any ideas as to what went wrong?

Possible wire grounding out leading to rev counter

I may have the same issue. Both times it has happened it was after a harder pull 0-60 and going up hill. Once I hit 4th gear (kz900) I lost pretty much all pull even with WOT. Get to the top of the hill, power down and back up, then back to normal. I am getting ready to rejet and rebuild carbs, my mechanic said it may be because I tapped out the main jet and was fuel starved.
I will be watching your thread for ideas. I will be updating my misfire thread with some pics and more symptoms

Found the problem.
The left hand coil was cracked, right where the HT lead is attached.
