third gear bump to second was created by Fox
Hello all,

I 'm starting to work on my kz1000 ltd b2 1978 to resolve a problem :
When i ride in third gear it bump alone to second gear when i accelerate.
It bump from third gear to neutral when i decelerate...

What can be the problem? I would really appreciate some good keywords to start working on it :)

Regards
Fox

If this happens in third gear only, it could be a bent shift fork that is not allowing the gears to fully engage. If this has happened very many times, the engagement dogs may be badly rounded off as well. The only way to know for sure is to break open the crankcase and carefully measure and insect the transmission and related parts.

You have a bent or broken shift fork(s). You will need to split cases to fix. most of the parts are out there. i would stop shifting it until you inspect the tranny. R

Before you split the cases just try requisitioning the gear lever on it's spline, sometimes they don't nudge the gear shift quite enough ... a long shot but worth at try. Also if it has been down the road the external selector mechanism could be bent..that is an easy fix.

I'm tall with big feet so have to set all my bikes up just for me....others find my bikes uncomfortable to ride. Add a pair of size 12 hobnails steel toecap and this gear lever set up becomes more important otherwise more missed gears and awkward neutral selection.

IMO, you should carefully measure the relevant parts of the forks, the grooves the forks ride in and the drum. The specifications are in the fsm. If one of the forks is bent, it could cause excessive wear elsewhere. Doing it right the first time will save you time and money later.
