1978 KZ750 stock bore?

22 Feb 2017 13:28
#754848
I have an old KZ750 twin motor sitting around with shiny new cylinders and a re-done head that I never put back together. I was wondering what the stock bore was so I could measure the current bore and figure out what size pistons/rings I need. Anyone know?

thanks guys,

78 mm. You will have problems finding any new over size piston's or rings.

I think they only honed it. Its been several years since i picked it all up from the machine shop. Been sitting on a garage floor all redone ever since,

Do these pistons look like they're any good? They came out of the motor when i first pulled it apart several years ago. I was hoping to just slap some new rings on and call it good. You can see on the one picture, at the tip of my thumb theres a punch mark below the ring gap. The rings are stuck in this piston and i must've been trying to remove them (i dont remember  )

Yeah im missing the buckets and shims. So another question, whats a good starting point for shim thickness? found a set of buckets on ebay. Now i just gotta pick out what shims i want to start with.

Only measuring will tell you if the pistons are still in spec. Remove the punch mark with a fine file. Start with a set of thin shims. There is no easy way to know without assembling the valve train.
Good luck.

Alright, ill post the build progress when the parts come in. These pistons will work so that cuts down on part cost quite a bit. Thanks man

Take a look at the link below. It contains the Kawasaki Service Manual for some of the KZ750 twin models. Ed

Okay so im waiting on the new rings and gasket set. I had to order some pistons as well because i destroyed the one with the stuck rings trying to get them out. They are used but in way better shape than the ones i started with. I also ordered valve seals, buckets, shims, points and an oil filter. I can't remember what the machine shop told me about the valve guides. If i stick a valve in there, how much side-to-side play is acceptable? Im in the process of polishing up the case covers right now and washing the grime out of the bottom end (actually wasn't too dirty to start with). As far as the clutch goes, if the fibers look alright should i just rough the steels up a little bit with some sand paper and throw it back together?
