Starter clutch? was created by JoHNY
Is it a motor out job or can it be done with the motor in situ?

You can do it either way, this has been discussed here quite a lot over the years.

Like TC says do a search......... lots of info...... I have had a bad case of vertigo for some time so I needed to pull the motor as laying flat on my back working on it would have make the world spin around....... it was nice on the bench easy to get to everything but is alot more work getting it put back together.

I have been putting it off and haven't even looked at the bike. Pressed the button last night and it started first time, then again and again. Seems to have righted itself.....................go figure???

They tend to be a bit intermittent for a while when on their way out. Also factors like how in- balance your carbs are, or a decent charged battery maybe even engine oil spec could have a difference.

My local bike shop used to do them through the sump all the time back in the day, other methods I've seen include putting the bike on it's side. lifting it high onto it's back wheel or even with the bike upside down! From experience, the 550's are a very tight fit, maybe the 650 have a touch more space.

I can imagine in the factory this primary shaft fitting might have been done by tiny Japanese ladies with very small hands.

I'm pretty sure if you pull the clutch basket out you can drive the primary shaft out and swap the starter clutch with the sump removed. Might help to pull the oil pump out too for more space.

Hmmm, let's think, do I know any small Nip ladies? LOL

Now the winter is coming I think I'll leave it till next spring. But apparently you can do it from the bottom. I gather the trick is to get the clutch off then lay it on it's left side and pull the shaft. Trouble is once you do that I'll probably notice other bits that will need renewing
