What is the normal oil consumption?

I've have this kz1100 with 30k miles for a couple of months and it runs and rides great. But I'm constantly adding oil. No real leaks. Some seeping from the alternator grommet but a quarter size puddle over night. Literally 4 to 6 drops. I don't see any evidence of oil on the bottom of the bike or my left foot. Never see smoke from the exhaust and last time I checked compression it was 150 on 4. Valves adjusted 2k miles ago. About 80 percent highway and 20 percent in town.

I'm running Rotella 15w40 and a lot of in town riding. I'm having to add 4 or 5 oz of oil every couple of hundred miles to bring the level up to the middle of the window. Seems like when I check it, on center stand sitting over night, it's not registering in the window. Add enough to go 1/2 way to full up the window, usually 4 oz or so which is a guess. Not measured. But in about 2k miles I've put about a quart in.

I have the valve cover vents with just a hose between the two. The top hole in the Air box is plugged. The breather was not removed and cleaned but the hose is there and hooked to the air box.

Don't fix it until it's broken.

If you're using about a quart every 2,000 miles you don't have a problem at all. Ed

30,000 miles? Air cooled... Sounds like normal wear and tear to me.
Valve guide seals stiffening and standard oil control ring wear.

Old valve guide seals. Not bad enough to tear down though.

Will an engine running at 5-7k rpms consume more oil than one at 4k covering the same distance down the road?
If so, that would explain my engine's consumation.

They were known oil burners even when new. If you add a quart every 2000 miles you are doing great. A worn one will burn a quart every 200 miles.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks guys. It's just about due for an oil/filter change as I like to do that at about 3k mile intervals. I guess what threw me was that my son does most of the riding and he used what was left of the Rotella I had hanging around. I'm just happy to see that he checks oil level and tire pressure regularly. That got me thinking and so I thought I'd ask here first. That bike has been super reliable but noticing a little slipping clutch in 2nd and 3rd when you get up into the torque range approaching red line. I'm thinking about a new clutch and springs over the winter. Usually clutches last longer than that but I have no idea how it was ridden for the first 28k miles of it's life.

Don't fix it until it's broken.
