1983 KZ1100D2 Clutch Trouble was created by badams215236
I have been slowly rebuilding a 1983 KZ1100 Spectre. Today I replaced the clutch cable and went through the cable adjustment procedure 3 different times. yet the clutch is only doing anything in the last 3/4" or so of letting out the clutch lever. this doesn't seem right to me and makes riding the bike difficult. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. F.YI. I found the procedure in me manual and on the forum these are the steps I took to adjust the clutch.
1. close the middle adjuster completely to make the cable as long as possible
2. set the proper gap at the lever adjuster.
3. loosen the lock nut and turn the screw in until resistance is felt.
4. take all the slack out of the cable with the middle adjuster
5. using the lever adjuster set the free play.

Thanks again

On my KZ-J style engines, I have always backed the cable adjustments (lever and mid - cable) all the way in to slacken the cable completely. Then I make the factory specified adjustment at the left engine cover (screw and locknut). I make sure the locknut is backed way off, then tighten the screw adjuster until the screw just touches the pushrod (slight resistance), then back it off 1/4 turn (no more than that!), and tighten the locknut. Then adjust the cable at the mid-adjustment until there is just 1/2" of lever movement at the end of the lever, then adjust the last little bit at the lever adjuster until there is only 1/8 to 1/4" of play at the lever's end. always try to get the lever adjuster's "slots" to face downward when you are done to keep water and dirt out of the cable...

Your engine uses the helix (screw) style clutch release mechanism, unlike the 83 GPz1100-A that uses the ball bearing and ramp / cam mechanism. The helix mechanism is more sensitive to incorrect adjustments, and is stiffer to pull. If you find a problem with the mechanism, I suggest replacing it with the 1983 - 84 GPz1100 style mechanism. It bolts in directly to the side cover in place of the helix type.

Looks like you have the correct procedure except #2 should be loosen lever adjuster. You want mid and lever set for maximum looseness before adjusting the actuator.
