Replace the cable. This is what I use for cable lubrication. Quick, easy, and relatively mess-free.

EZ pull ball and ramp. Use axle grease, install as I suggested. I have a O ring chain. I spray chain lube on it every 2-400 miles. A standard chain needs it every 200 or so. Less depending where you are. Cleaning wouldn't hurt the sprocket cover. I use PJ1 chain lube for O ring chains. I've used the chain lube found at the local A/P stores too.

Where the cable attaches to the clevis can wear the rivet,causing an unusual feel to the clutch action. Check for wear,as this happen to my 1982 GPz 1100 B2 . I repaired it by drilling out the rivet,and installing a 1/4" bolt,making sure there were no threads to wear away parts.
