I ear about some thing Like "its a kawi, they tick" and i think this is true. My 550 its running very good but even after a rebuild i still hear the typical knocking noise from the primary chain and from the botton of the engine. I think this is a character of those engines.
Even the timing chain is ticking, especially when isnt warmed up.
What im curious about is if the clutch basket is noisy too.
I hear sometimes, when the engine is hot, typical already after a 5/6 miles run, a knock from the clutch cover. I can hear it when the bike is in neutral , with clutch lever pulled or Not.
Are those engine really so noisy? Compared to a 1987 Honda cb750f the difference is an abyss ..
My carbs are synched with a carbtune and i had all 4 the same 24 cm hg.
So i dont think the knock its from carbs or sync.
Let me know your experience about

Some of those sounds (like the clutch noises) don't seem to be typical and may indicate an adjustment or repair is needed. On my KZ650 the primary chain noise is present if I set the idle too low, but with the idle set at 1000 rpm the primary chain noise goes away. Ed

If you didn't replace the primary chain during the rebuild, it will probably still make noise, especially when cold. But usually it should quiet down after the motor warms up, smooths out, and the idle gets up to 1100 to 1200.
Excessive valve ticking usually means the lash gap is on the large side of the range, or over.

agreed Ed and Lou. See the primary chain tensioner thread.
IMO these nearly always sound rough on idle, also most UK bikes are 50K miles plus now.
I've only once read of a primary chain failing on a very highly tuned bored out racebike running on top fuel. I did hear of another, apparently it virtually cut the motor in half although this may have been pub talk.
