Hi everyone. I got this 97 about 2 months ago. Got it running but have had a few hickups and can't find anything on the thread that match my issues. I have bs34's.everything is bone stock. After cleaning my carbs and replacing all o rings and gaskets cause it was sitting for 10 years I set the mixture screws to 2 turns out and sync'd the carbs. The bike had been running great.pulls like a train.but cylinder 1 not firing correctly? Bike runs smooth but when I pull the plug wire on 1 nothing changes,Read a post that said I should be about 2.5 turns out so I set to that and immediately noticed the rpms hanging at about 1600 after being rode hard on the freeway and when really hot out I get some valve noise under hard acceleration.have done the spray test on the boots with starting fluid and no changes to the rpms.kept riding it cause well it's a blast to ride. Then noticed my exhaust manifold turning blue. Like really blue. Worse on 2 and 3 then 1 and 4. Checked timing and advance and every thing is spot on. Checked the coils and they are in spec. I know I've jumped around allot but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction

What do you mean if it's not too late? I just got my new valve cover gasket yesterday so valve adjustments was next on my list

Did you replace the O-rings on the pilot screws? Opening the screw from 2 to 2.5 shouldn't cause a hanging idle unless false air is getting sucked in somehow. Maybe the hanging idle after adjusting the screws is just a coincidence? Most likely. At any rate, the high idle and bluing pipes suggest you have a lean mixture, more likely due to vacuum leaks. You might want to explore that.
BTW, some people say to spray stuff on the intake boots/carbs etc to find vacuum leaks, but in my experience that only shows gross leaks, not smaller ones.

I eliminated all the emissions vacuum lines and hooked the Reed valves to eachother. Caped the vacuum ports on the carbs. It was in service for Glendale az police until sold at auction. A harley shop bought it for one of their customers and the guy backed out so they parked it on the line until they needed room and moved it to the "field" behind the shop where it sat for 10 years and I just happened to notice the black and white tank through the weeds while driving by one day and scoped it up. I have a 95 kzp with bad rings so I turned it into a parts bike for this one

Good. Then you can rule that one out.
Tight exhaust valves.
