I'm still runing the old school small 80s type coolers. I think one is a lockhart and the other a derale. I've seen Zs on youtube with a lot bigger coolers, briaded lines etc etc, and am wondering what everyone else is running and maybe I need to upgrade. I'm in the desert southwest US and the intese summer heat is just brutal on air cooled bikes and humanoids alike.

Hi,
I just bought a kz1100. It has a cooler up front behind the front tire which looks aftermarket, but it is not hooked up. a rubber line connects right side of the engine to something under the carbs.
Did the factory bikes have oil coolers?
How hot do they get without one? how do you know how hot it gets?

Wow, I've never seen one mounted in that location before. Mine are all up front so they can get air flow from forward movement.

drmiller, depends on the climate you live in, but anywhere you live, keeping the oil cool is just added protection for your motor and extends oil lubrication life... Summer heat is brutal in the tropics and desert, so an oil cooler was always a must on my Zs.

If it's stock the Lockhart should be good enough. I bought one from one of our members. ZX7 I think. Had to open up the ports from 3/8 to 1/2" to be certain I have enough oil flow.

so stock there is no oil cooler?

Is there normally a hard line between the two fittings? I wonder why the previous owner unhooked the oil cooler. and I wonder if he used appropriate oil line. Looks like heater hose.....

I'm in Idaho, which can get hot, but nothing like somewhere really hot.

If I add an oil cooler to my 80 1000 b,do you need to increase oil level due to fact of oil leaving motor and returning thru cooler?? The ports that you connect oil cooler to,,what is connected to them prior to me installing a cooler???thanks for any input... Pat

You'll need the fittings to replace the oil rizer like I have in my thread. My cooler takes about 1/2 quart. I put the intakes upside down so the oil in the cooler wouldn't flow back into the engine. The one I had before, the oil light stayed on for a few seconds until the pressure built up. Now it's immediate. They changed the rizers on the later engines. Got a pic of what you have?

Correction. I ran the lines above the cooler along the back bones, then down in between # 1&2 and #3/4 carbs.
