If you really want to check them blow compressed air around where each valve meets the seat and watch for bubbles in the solvent in the ports.

Theres nothing wrong doing it that way to check a used head,or one thats been sitting around a while.
I also do it after a valve job with the compressed air to double check things.
Its been done since the beginning of time.
