reusing head gasket 1982 GPZ750
24 Mar 2016 08:56
HI All, Looks like I'm going to have to replace some valve seals on my fresh rebuild. It seems the machinist nicked one or more when he trimmed the valve stems to reagin some clearance. My question is can I reuse the head gasket which only has 600 miles on it since the build, or do I need to put another new one in. Thanks for your help, Mark

He 'Tipped" the valves in the head? I've reused head gaskets and will again if need be. I clean it well and use silver paint on it. I guess you can use copper spray but I haven't tried it. If I could afford a new one and have the bike sit for a while, I'd buy new.

No he tipped them out of the head. I suspect he left a burr on a valve tip and nicked the seal. I'll know better when I pull the valve covers off to inspect my clearances.

Two piece gasket or one. I'm taking a ride to my daughter's soon so I'll check back later. Look in my Good Guys thread for gaskets. I use one piece.

I don't think it's advised to try to reuse the gasket. For one thing if you applied sealer to the ends of the gasket as per instructions in the factory service manual the gasket will stick and (likely) will pull apart when you remove the head.
