Making previous owner exhaust mod usable...

So I'm working on an 81 550 LTD. Its pretty dirty and will need some tlc, but it has potential to be a good looking bike.....except... the damn harley touring mufflers he welded (poorly) on. I got the bike for a parts donor to my daily runner, I got what I wanted, and now I'd like to stick as little as possible into it and sell it for what I paid. (I bought it non-running for $300...I'm thinking clean it up some and get it running halfway decent and re-sell for $500). Also, take a look at the pic of the internals - there is a baffle there, but there is essentially a clear shot straight through it...thinking of adding a washer/bolt combo to add a little backpressure...

I didn't notice how terrible they were when I picked up the bike, but after I got the pipes off I realized how bad it was... The slip ons are just plain old too long. And they are slash cut, which would be ok if he had mounted them the same on both sides...but he didn't. He had the left hand side supported with a universal band with all the holes drilled in it....right hand side had nothing. I figured I'd cut the pipes off, turn them so that the hanger brackets were aligned properly so I could make a rigid mount. After cutting the one side off I realized why he had them rotated and the hangers not square with the bike - there is a drain hole in the muffler that if you mounted it so you could easily use the mount, that hole would face upwards....great.... and then I realized that both mufflers weren't equal in length either - the left hand one was at least 6" further back....

So, long story short, I cut the longer one off...haven't decided how in the hell I'm going to hang this thing yet... I plan to just mock it up and use some reducers and a clamp and then maybe have a friend weld it. Close to just getting some emgo ones from jc whitney and clamping them on, but I'm just basically getting the bike to be represented as "runs well, needs a little tlc" and sell it.

I suspect you will have far fewer headaches if you instal two matching mufflers and just add a few dollars to the price. Maybe you could find a useable pa ir in a local wrecking yard.

Well the point is to not spend any cash if possible
And get rid of it. If I got HD mufflers I'd still be
Screwing around with custom fitting it. For $100
I can get nearly plug and play emgo ones.
