Looking at an 01 was created by pcso679
Have a colleague who is selling an 01 KZ1000p. He wants $1000 but it needs some work. For starters it has approximately 90,000 miles, new battery, new chain and sprockets. Runs fine, rides nice. Looks wise it needs some help, fairing is a little cracked on the black plastic pieces around the windshield, it has an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold gasket, and it has an oil leak that I haven't been able to track down yet (haven't had a lot of time to look at it yet but I am hoping to have a couple hours tomorrow to look it over). Also the speedometer stopped working a couple weeks ago on his way to work.
Where are good places to start looking for the oil leak? The front of the motor around the exhaust is covered in oil, so it looks like it has leaked for some time now. Also what type of maintenance is needed for it if it has 90,000 miles? He has only owned the bike for two years and has pretty much just rode it back and forth to work so he hasn't put a majority of the miles on it. He has the receipts for oil changes and a tune up but doesn't know any of the service history on it.

O ring around the cam chain shaft. Head has to come off to fix it.

Is it easy to verify that without tearing into the bike? Where should I look to verify that is where it is leaking from?

Clean it well then as suggested here, apply some powder in that area, run it and watch where it leaks.

Ha ha .... I think we all know what the chances are that its not the cam chain's channel, O'ring leaking.
At 90,000 miles, and since you'll be pulling the head off to fix a leak, you may as well have the valves done too and if finances allow, pull the cylinder off so you can do the pistons/rings.

that's a lot of miles ,wouldn't surprise me if it needs a lot more work ,on that engine ,unless its been serviced and maintained regularly

He doesn't have any service records except for the last two years and it only includes oil changes and a tune up. After a thorough look at the bike I decided to pass, looks like a project I am not quite ready to tackle. Thanks for your time.
