The 550 I flipped last year was doing the same thing. Not unuseual and helped convince the PO the bike was about to die. The shops in the San Diego area all told him the bike wasn't worth fixing. I saw it listed on CL for 300 parts only. After e-mailing him being sure someone would scoop it up I told him it would cost me $100 in gas to pick it up. He said come and get it free. Divorce so he didn't want the B***h to get it. Carbs were gunked up, the second day it was running, I synced the carbs and it purred like a kitten. I should have kept it.

Proper carb sync often reduces or eliminates the noise at idle.
