Funny squawk noise when hitting starter

My'91 Zephyr 750 used to do this too when the engine was cold - never got around to working out what the issue was - guess maybe some wear in the starter clutch - sounded a bit like a squawking dog noise. Z1-R clutch was doing the clanging/rattling until I replaced the rollers/pins and springs. No wear evident on the starter clutch rollers or pins or the starter gear boss but the springs were 25% compressed compared to the new ones and quite weak - so guess that this was the source of the rattling/clanging?
