X-pipe gaskets was created by retterath
I've got a Murray X-pipe on a 1980 KZ1000 ltd, and have been trying to track down an air leak. It occurred to me that when I replaced the pipe after cleaning and painting it, there weren't any gaskets or seals between the head and pipe. Should there be? Copper washers or something?

I am not familiar with your exhaust, but with any exhaust you are going to need washers, usually they are made of copper and you also need header shims to get a snug fit and have no leaks.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Sorry! You must remove it now! And replace it with another exhaust.
Then ship the X-pipe to me immediately .
This will fix your leak.

Retterath......I will trade you a new MAC for that old Murray X pipe! But you still need to install new copper gaskets to prevent leaks. The copper gaskets are hollow tube rings that crush to seal pipes that do not align perfectly to the head port. Also some Murray race pipes had thin aluminum spacer rings that slipped onto the ends of the head pipes to center them in the ports. If these are missing these it might be difficult to get them to seal because the stack up and alignment will not be correct.

I 'm reminded of the time I took some rare and desirable big block ford heads to have small cracks repaired, "These are not repairable, but i"ll give you $500 for them."

Will get a good look in there in a bit. You know, It ran great until i removed and replaced the exhaust.

The exhaust gaskets are hollow copper & get crushed when you tighten down the exhaust, & should be replaced with new ones whenever you replace your exhaust system
use a small screwdriver or pick to make sure the old gaskets are still not in there, as they turn black over time & it's hard to notice them still in your head
