sealant on 4 studs was created by D3
can someone explain why "liquid gasket' is required around the 4 rear cylinder studs as instructed by the genuine 1979-1980 KZ1000 workshop manual?

surely if oil did seep thru base gasket the low oil pump/crank case pressure, oil could not work its way up those studs?

I have never used sealer in those areas. They are open to the air. Perhaps the 1000's had seepage there being the gasket is so thin in that area. If in doubt, I'd use RTV as a sealant so removing the block won't be a problem in the future.

Some of the stud holes are drilled all the way through the top case half. The sealer is to keep oil vapor and splash, under pressure inside the crankcase, from working up through the stud threads and wicking outside the engine.

It should be done on the Z1 as well. Although not in the original Z1 manual, service bulletin 74Z-33 released n Oct 74 says to apply sealant to all cylinder studs except the 2 rear outer. This was to address oil leakage around the base gasket. This was revised to just the rear inner 4 studs in the later KZ-1000 manuals.
I'll try to post a copy of the SB.
