1981 Kz 550 timing advancer question. was created by rrsmsw9999
Okay , I searched for this issue to no avail. Perhaps someone knows. This kz550 has a pulsing ignition. I need a timing advancer for reasons I will not describe on here now. My question is can I use other model pulsing ignition timing advancers? They look similar, but are different part numbers. What says ye?

80-84 KZ550 advancer units all use PN 21148-1016
There are a couple on ebay, but not cheap ($75 shipped).
I don't know if the advancer off say a 750 would fit. If it does then you should be fine to use it. Worst case is the advance curve will be slightly different, which is unlikely to cause problems.

Or an 81-83 KZ650-CSR advancer --- I would assume the advance curve would be closer to the 550 than the 750. ???
From the diagrams at Partzilla the 81 csr has the same timing advancer bolt & "nut" as the 550A, as do a number of other models, but I have no idea if the part fitment would be a reliable indicator of the physical interchangeability of the advancers between different sized models.

Hey Steve,
Pics here are limited at the moment. The original advancer was too corroded and rusted to free up and work. I bought one one Ebay. The picture looked good but I now know why it was cheaper. The two prongs on the end of the advancer that hold the 17mm nut are sheared off. I have the Ebay part installed on the bike so a pic is not readily available. I do not see an operational problem, but using a wrench on the crank to check valve clearances would be a no go until I get the part in good condition. R

It'll only be good for parts. I'll take a pic. If you want it, I'll send it for the shipping. I'll need your zip code and PM me with your address if you'd like it.

Got your PM. As long as your arms and springs are good, plus the back/ timing marks are the same, it should work for you. I used the arms on this one because the springs were heavier. I'm keeping my stock arms and springs just in case.
If it will work for you, it's yours and I'll try to get it out today.

I assume sheared, no grinder marks and actually the Ebay pic was taken at an angle that looked like they were there. It runs fine, but no crank turning turning possible. Thanks again. R
