1981 KZ440 clutch and throttle cables. was created by MartyrMachine
I'm removing the stock handlebars and throwing on some clip ons. The problem i'm realizing I may run in to is that the throttle and clutch cables are pretty long. They were already pretty long on the stock handlebars, and those things were a lot taller. What would you all recommend I do here? Keep the stock ones and try to hide them? Or buy an aftermarket cable or an OEM cable from a different bike with shorter bars? Any recommendations on cables/ solutions?

Standard models & GPzs should be shorter. Measure yours, then search Z1Enterprises.com for KZ440 cable. Or 550. 650. 750. or 1000. Some of the same cables will be listed for all of them. Z1Ent has the measurements. I installed a MP 03-0030 clutch cable (Z1Ent # TU06-3030}. Make sure the ends are the same. & note any significant differences. The slack might need to be the same, especially on the throttle cables --- slightly longer is okay, but shorter could be problematic. don't ask how I know. doh.

To get a good idea of the needed lengths disconnect the clutch cable at the lever end, then figure out the overage. Tape it in place & move the handlebars from side to side, making sure the other end stays in place. Do the same for the throttle cables, but disconnect them at the carburetors. Be sure to note how they're routed before removing --- it can be vexing installing new cables correctly.

Awesome, thanks! I'll check to see if anyone has some lying around first before I go and buy a whole new set. But i'll definitely check that out.

You can see how I routed my stock cables with superbike and clipons on the kz400s I had. this will get you by until you order shorter cables (I never needed to). Some purists would claim the extra cable sticking out in the front looks sloppy. I didn't care.

I've done similar with mine with superbike bars, just rerouted the cables a bit to take up the extra slack. I'm sure it would look a little better with some shorter cables but it works fine for now.
