I have a 77 KZ1000 with a 1327 bottom and a 83-84 GPZ1100 Larry Cavanaugh prepped head. I am going to run a lockup clutch. Would like some feedback on the Differences of these 2 lockups. I have both but undecided. The snowflake is about 8 ounces lighter and is said to be a 2 stage. Would this work for me bike which will be ridden sparingly to have occasional race on track and play on the street. thanks for anyone's help. Tom

I'd go with the lighter of the 2 due to its rotating mass. They work off Trans output speed so in theory it acts like sprung weight, like adding tire and wheel weight. The design of the 2 are basically the same as in function is the same, between clutch spring preload and lever weight you have 2 stages of lockup is the idea behind it.

They are both called lock-ups, work the same and you adjust them the same. Some call them (both) a two-stage (because you can adjust the static spring pressure and the weight on the arms for different reactions on where it affects the run), but they are your basic lock-ups. There is a multi-stage lock-up but it looks different and although it works on same principle it is more adjustable then these two. And also more expensive. I like the snowflake for same reasons Les says. Less rotating wieght. Or you can get a MTC Gen11 clutch. They are awesome and only cost about $2500!

I see that on the bottom of the bosses where the spring seat is, the snowflake has a shoulder machined and the round lockup doesnt. i have been told to use stock springs as to not have too much spring pressure cause the lockup will increase with speed. so, stay with stock springs?

I've seen stock, old worn or weak stock and H2 spings. If you not trying to bust off some low 60' times, go with stock and no weights, smoothest transition. Lite springs and heavy weights, hard transition, balancing act is what your after and each bike/rider/track is different. play with it, just adds to seat time.

Only diff. is the snowflake is cut out more then the disk type
and the snowflake has retainer screws for the arm pins and not just peened in
but they'll do the same thing.
Lots of way's to set one up just depends on how you want to ride the bike
First thing is put a good clutch pack and spring's in it to start with and see if you need the lock up.
If it's gonna slip the clutch it'll be the top of 4th or 5th gear.

For the road either will do the job.
The snowflake is a two stage and the other one is single stage .
The shoulders on the two stages spring boss's allow the springs preload to be altered by way of shims (washers) so you can increase or decrease the amount of clutch on the 60 foot.
To keep things simple use the single stage to reduce clutch slip when on the power.
The two stage will need a little experimentation with springs and shims to get the right balance of slip and grip off the line for a perfect launch.

I think im going to use the snowflake lockup because i think its what will work for my setup. I really appreciate the advice that you guys give. This forum has been such a help with my slow moving project. The Round lockup is for sale. $50.00 shipped in the U.S. Let me know by forum or pm. The disc on the right of the pic is the one for sale. 09 Oct 2015 06:36My bike came with a snow flake off the bike in the parts bin. You guys told me what it was last time and I forgot. What does it do again and how is it installed?les holt wrote: I've seen stock, old worn or weak stock and H2 spings.
