Cam Timing and 1-4 T mark on 79 650B3
21 Sep 2015 06:50 - 21 Sep 2015 07:22
Replaced 3 shims a few months ago, #2 exhaust was a swapped shim that placed it at 0.18 mm right at the top of the clearance range (0.08-0.18). Decided to measure again this weekend since I had the tank and coils off. #2 clearance was greater than 0.18. Ordered a new shim.
Double checked 36 pin count (check), cam T marks facing out (check), crankshaft at 1-4 T mark (check?).... Well, the 1-4 T mark is very close but not perfect. It lines up with the T rather than the mark. I spun the crankshaft enough to rotate to the next cam pin and the crankshaft was past the F mark, one pin being way too far ahead. I left it alone.
The FSM diagram for cam timing has the T mark over the "T"... I find this to be a misprint since both the advance marks on my 79-650B3's are not aligned like the diagram (the markings are in line > "T", T mark, "F", F mark >). I expected the T mark to be spot on. Is this a problem or normal?
Only thing I can come up with is the chain tensioner being on the tighter side and its rotating the crankshaft clockwise off-setting from the T mark closer to the "T" position. Think I may have answered my own question, since you don't set the cams and timing marks with tension on the chain.

You can take out the #4 plug and drop in a feeler (soft metal rod of some sort). Then rock the crank back and forth using a visegrip or something with no slop. The center of the back and forth wrench travel, where the piston does not move, is actual TDC. Then look at the timing marks. Even if there is no conflict with the manual, this should be done just for academic reasons. Sometimes it's off a tiny bit, and it's good to know where actual TDC is.
