Tach nut was created by H-Bomb
Hi all,
I am a recent owner of KZ750 twin and am restoring and making into a scrambler style.
I have removed the standard dials and replaced with only a speedometer, so I no longer want or need the tachometer cable.
Is it OK to just leave the nut as it is (but no cable attached and therefore there is a hole), or do I need to get a closed nut to replace and seal?
Any idea on where I could buy a closed nut.
Thanks!

Maybe get a metric plug? From eebbaayy photos the hole is threaded. You might have to remove the tachometer drive stuff. bountyhunter might have a better suggestion --- he knows a lot about the 750-Twins.

The tach drive will surely leak oil with no cable in place.... most of them leak oil WITH the cable in there as well.
One possibility: Take the threaded collar off the tach cable that fits into the head. Make a flat round washer that fits under the threaded collar for the tach cable and seal it with a bit of RTV and crank it on. Might work?
I have never seen a "sealed nut" for it but I'm sure one could be fabricated.

Is the tach pinion & stuff easy to remove? Or would he have to remove the camshaft first?

My 750 twin didn't have a tach cable when i bought it. This plug was in place of the tach nut. Maybe it will provide some inspiration.

The following references are to Z1.
Am uncertain as to extent applicable to KZ750 twin.
Inner seal should prevent any oil from escaping around the shaft. Should remain bone dry with engine running and cable detached.
O'ring prevents oil from escaping around the outside of the housing. Some models have two o'rings on the housing.

INNER SEAL
ANOTHER PLUG EXAMPLE -- Perhaps custom-made??
Good Fortune!

At last I can finally contribute something to this forum rather than benefit from the knowledge of others!
Thanks to the prompting of martin I looked into the metric plug idea and found a perfect fitting replacement part that did the job perfectly!

Thanks all!
